Curfew imposed in Manipur after violent clashes erupt in Imphal

Two ethnic groups in Manipur clashed on Monday morning that left 33 injured, six of whom are in serious conditions. The clash occurred between a group of Meitei Hindus and Muslims and took place at Mayang Imphal area in Imphal West district at around 9 am. Police could only contain the violence around 5 pm and curfew has been imposed in the area under Section 144 of the CrPC.
Nine houses and shops were torched during the clashes.
Police sources said that they received information that the house of a man named Rajen of Mayang Imphal Konchak had caught fire. However, people said the fire was a deliberate act by someone and started people started agitating.
Fire tenders and the police rushed to the spot but the protesting crowd did not allow them to enter. Eye witnesses say that some people even fired at the police. A police commando is one among the seriously injured. Police are investigating if the fire was deliberate.
Additional police forces from three other districts have been rushed there to maintain law and order.
